Drawn by the mysterious and evocative pull of the sea, Stephen Anderson's recent work brings together the wild characters of aquatic life, along with narrative tales of imaginary sea adventures. Anderson's subjects continue to be rooted in a love for the dramatic and fantastic. Often inspired by old pulp magazine covers and science fiction films, these paintings are created entirely from his imagination. Each composition is a recombination of the mythical monsters of the deep, warring ships, and flora and fauna residing in his creative sub-conscious. Anderson's self-taught technique of textured surfaces and bold colors key up the fabulous mermaids and anthropomorphic plant life he depicts. The vision of this water world is earnest in its impossibility and heartfelt in its playful and detailed storytelling.
