Betsy Stirratt's paintings explore ideas about excess and appearance and possess measured luxury, voluptuousness and desirability. Her process of composing layers of organic forms and lush color grounds additively culminates in the finished painting. The layers recall both micro and macro views of esoteric organisms, creating a sensuous surface, with flowers serving as a biological reality check. The languorous surfaces provide an end result of delicate beauty that vaguely references the living. Modern design and aspects of digital images influence the works. The flat bright colors resonate with the feel of the internet and the web, but refer to aspects of digital media. They are very much influenced by current graphic and interior design as well as natural and biological forms and phenomena. |
