Hi everyone... this coming weekend is what I am calling... Handsome Family Weekend. They are playing the Old Town School on Sunday night (Sold Out), then they have a songwriting workshop on Monday night, and on Tuesday Rennie Sparks has a one night only painting show with me at one of my now many nomadic locations, this one being Tom Robinson Gallery at North and Western. I know it's a little weird to have a show on a Tuesday night, but we are lucky to have Rennie and Brett able to grace our presence. They will play a short set at the beginning of the night, and then we will celebrate her first painting show and examine Rennie's "visions of invisibility", through her new paintings, collection of dog and cat food cans collected from around the world, and her ample collection of cat whiskers. The Handsome Family will also be on Fresh Air sometime next week. Hopefully the day before or day of the show here in town! Below is more detailed press and a bio...
Underwater Vines / Rennie Sparks / paintings and collections
Presented by Aron Packer Projects
Show Location / 2416 W. North Ave (at Western), Chicago, IL 60647
Tuesday, September, 20, 2016 from 6 - 9 PM.
Rennie Sparks' odd, sometimes dark and offbeat vision for her Handsome Family lyrics hold true for her paintings. She has been selling her work on-line and doing commissioned pet portraits for many years and is known for her vivid and surprising use of color. In this, her first art exhibition, entitled Underwater Vines (a quote from the Handsome Family song, "My Friend") Rennie focuses on images of water, seaweed, octopuses, frogs, snakes-the squirmy, dark and lovely currents beneath what we can easily see. Rennie is not a traditional painter even when doing commissioned portraits. If you send her a picture of your dog sitting in the driveway she might paint your dog up in a tree or leaping over a sea of flames. Rennie often makes her own frames (decorated with varnished black beans). At this show she will also exhibit paintings on circular drumheads as well as fully-functional Telecaster guitars which were built by Brett then painted by Rennie. Sparks will also show some of her dog food cans collected around the world, and a collection of found cat whiskers that has taken decades to amass! She and her husband Brett will play a few 'unplugged' songs to begin the night so get there on time.
(About) The Handsome Family is a songwriting team consisting of husband and wife Brett and Rennie Sparks. The band formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1993 and are currently based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They are perhaps best known for their song "Far from Any Road" from the album Singing Bones, which was chosen by T Bone Burnett as the main title theme for the first season of HBO's 2014 crime drama True Detective. Millions of viewers became fans of the song written 12 years earlier about fireants and desert plants-a song now linked forever to a show about cops in a psychic swamp. September, 2016 brings the release of Unseen - 10 new songs by The Handsome Family - a couple both world-famous and happily invisible. In both music and art Rennie is happiest when she disappears inside her work. Aron Packer Projects is excited to share Rennie Sparks visions of invisibility with the larger world.
