In a medium that is quiet and
intimate, Colleen O'Rourke creates humorous scenes out of tiny colorful
seed beads. O'Rourke's small wall pieces and sculptures are often
depictions of a specifically female experience, and are reverential of
O'Rourke's own experiences. The work in this exhibition, including a
small sculpture of a pregnant woman, and another of a yellow skinned
nude, are amusing looks at the often funny, and more often exasperating
trials and tribulations of motherhood. What was originally inspired by
African tribal beadwork and had become the artist's medium due to lack
of workspace, is now a proof that Colleen O'Rourke is a witty, serious
artist, who still has the ability to laugh at herself and at life in
general.
