Robert Horvath

Robert Horvath paints young people - vividly dressed in fashionable clothes and poised for a night out. His sleek imagery could be taken from the hippest and glossiest magazine targeting this same demographic. Horvath omits identifications and backgrounds placing the characters in high key color fields, seemingly floating on heavenly white clouds. Their poses are familiar and the compositions have the intimacy of a snapshot. Focusing in on the individuals, Horvath conveys more personal desires underlying the images such as sexuality and the need to fit in. His paintings share with advertising a surreal portrait of reality: a group of youthful, attractive people stuck in a pose of closeness and enjoyment wavering between the ideal, the unattainable, and the unreal.
